Gonzalo’s latest work, dedicated to sloths, captures the tenderness and emotional trust that emanate from these fascinating mammals. Sloths, who spend 90% of their lives hanging from trees, are known for their ability to remain upside down for extended periods without affecting their breathing. These animals are folivores, primarily feeding on leaves, which explains their slow pace of life and low energy expenditure.

Their slowness is not a flaw but a survival strategy in nature. As Gonzalo explains, “Patience is their great virtue.” Sloths often remain motionless for hours and sleep up to 15 hours a day. Additionally, their fur hosts a microcosm of life, including microbes, bacteria, insects, fungi, and algae, which provides them with natural camouflage, making them nearly invisible to predators.

This artwork is not only an aesthetic delight but also a profound reflection on the conservation of this beautiful species, endemic to the Neotropical region, from the Yucatán Peninsula in Central America to Brazil. Sloths face serious threats, such as habitat fragmentation, road accidents, and illegal animal trafficking.

For Gonzalo, the use of color in his work is essential: “The use of color comes from the strength of my instinct and my commitment to trees, forests, and endangered species.” He also emphasizes the importance of teamwork to reverse these threats.

“Teaching children to be patient like sloths in a world where everything is expected immediately is an invaluable educational opportunity,” Gonzalo points out. “Patience is perseverance and consistency. It teaches us that some processes take time and that it is essential to learn to wait without frustration.”

Educating through emotions is undoubtedly the right path to environmental awareness.
