ANIMALS OF THE AFRICAN CONTINENT

The oryx is a majestic antelope adapted to the harshest environments on Earth, such as deserts and dry plains in Asia and Africa. Large and robust, this animal has become a symbol of survival in extreme conditions.

Its coat varies by species, though it is generally tawny with a white face and a distinctive black facial mask that gives it an enigmatic appearance. Its long, straight, ringed horns—more prominent in males—complete its imposing figure.

Herbivorous by nature, oryx feed on leaves, roots, and fruits, from which they extract the moisture needed to endure long periods without water. They possess the remarkable ability to raise their body temperature and use a nasal cooling system that minimizes water loss through sweating while filtering sand from the air they breathe. Their wide hooves and strong legs allow them to move with ease across the sand, while their herd life offers protection and cooperation in the search for resources.

The Oryx genus includes four species:

– Arabian Oryx (Leucoryx): Native to the Arabian Peninsula, it was on the brink of extinction due to hunting, but thanks to conservation programs, it was reintroduced into its natural habitat starting in 1980. It is currently classified as vulnerable. It is a national symbol of the United Arab Emirates, alongside the saker falcon.

– Scimitar Oryx: Inhabits the Sahel region of Africa. Its name comes from the curve of its horns, reminiscent of a scimitar.

– Gemsbok Oryx: The largest species, it can reach between 1.15 and 1.25 meters in height and weigh up to 250 kg. It lives in southern Africa.

– Beisa Oryx: Found in Kenya and the Horn of Africa, a vast peninsula that includes Somalia, Djibouti, Eritrea, and Ethiopia.

This piece invites us to reflect on three essential qualities: courage, tenacity, and perseverance.

As Gonzalo notes: “To educate is also to offer examples, and the oryx is a very powerful one. Courage is an inner strength born from willpower and expressed in action; it is a mental decision to face and move through fear.

Life requires effort, determination, and perseverance. Learning to wait, being tolerant of frustration, and pressing on—this is all part of growth.”

The oryx reminds us that even in the most challenging environments, life finds a way.

A true symbol of resilience that can inspire our own path—and that of others.
